Cheryl MacLean had dreamt of retiring in Costa Rica since she was in university and read a book about retiring in Costa Rica. Although a great many things changed (both in her life and in Costa Rica!) between reading the book and retirement, she and her husband James eventually made it happen.

Cheryl is a retired technical writer and a full-time author. She writes short literary fiction and upmarket women’s novels. She is an Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) writing group facilitator and writing coach.

James is a software engineer, perpetually on the verge of retirement.

The MacLeans split their time between Casa Mismac and their home in Canada.

Duque and Kina, our resident “watch” dogs spend most of their days sleeping on the deck, or under the steps or table. They have not yet learned to write.

Lucy is the newest member of the team. She’s a rambunctious young dog who thinks she’s a human and demands as much attention as any toddler. Thank goodness for dog-years.

Casa Mismac is quite simply a gem. It’s a stunning retreat where you can really focus on your writing. Located just outside of the charming town of Santiago de Puriscal, high up in the mountains, you can see for miles in every direction. I loved my room, which had a big comfortable bed, en-suite bathroom, and a large writing desk. Of course you can also write outside on the patio or down by the pool or anywhere you like on this big, beautiful property. Cheryl is a wonderful host, and a great cook. She was very attentive to my needs and was more than happy to arrange the occasional trip into town or to the beach if I so desired. The two dogs Duque and Kina are lovely and friendly too. In short I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone who wants a quiet and inspiring place to focus on their writing. I was able to get a lot of work done and at the same time feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Can’t wait to go back!

Casa Mismac is a one of a kind property in the beautiful hills near Puriscal CR. Spectacular views, beautiful grounds, a lovely big pool with shaded lounge area are just a few of the reasons to stay at this gorgeous property.  The house is spacious and beautifully decorated. Cheryl is a wonderful host and amazing chef. Multiple decks provide great vantage points for the view, relaxation and privacy. There are walking paths, fields, rain forest , even cattle grazing on the lower area of the 35+ acre property. Great food, relaxing, natural environment, fresh and clean accommodations, mountain views, flowers and trees – Casa Mismac is the perfect place to find inspiration for writing and peace of mind. I highly recommend it.

My time at Casa Mismac was magical. What a special place. I could spend my life sitting on that deck lost in the view and listening to the birds. I was a little worried about the big dogs but they are gentle and sweet (and quiet!). The house and grounds are spectacular and the food was scrumptious. I had plenty of quiet time to write and read and wander around the grounds. The Friday night feria (farmers’ market) was a special treat.
